Veterans Day events in the A-K Valley

Veterans Day events open to the public throughout the Valley include:

Apollo

• The 19th annual Apollo Area Veterans Day service will be at noon Friday in Curran-­Shaffer Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., 100 Owens View Ave. The Rev. Thomas Holmes, the Armstrong County American Legion Honor Guard, Memory Makers Dove Release and funeral directors Norman Connors and James A. Kunkle will participate. Details: 724-478-1244.

East Vandergrift

• A memorial ceremony and luminaria display will be at 6 p.m. Friday in Veterans Mem­orial Park.

Leechburg

• The Kiski Valley Community Band will present a free Veterans Day concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Leechburg Elks, 228 Market St., Leechburg. Please use the side entrance.

Lower Burrell

• The Veterans of Foreign Wars will sponsor a parade at 11 a.m. Friday. The procession will begin at Schreiber Street and go down Leechburg Road to Wildlife Lodge Road. Details: Commander Lee Johnson, 724-882-4195 or lfj12646@yahoo.com.

New Kensington/Arnold

• The New Kensington/Arnold Joint Veterans Group will sponsor a parade beginning at 10 a.m. Friday in Arnold and ending at the Gold Star Mothers Monument on Ninth Street in New Kensington, where there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at 11 a.m. Retired Air Force chaplain the Rev. Darryl Johnson will be the speaker.

Springdale

• Bells of peace will ring at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at which time there Springdale Veterans Association will have a ceremony at the Porter Street Monument in Springdale.

Tarentum

• Alle-Kiski Valley Historical Society Heritage Museum will host a free presentation of excerpts from John Bailey’s military veterans video series from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at the museum, 224 E. Seventh Ave. Local veterans included are William Tingle of Lower Burrell, JoAnn Koukar-Webb and the late Harold “Hal” Shaffer.

Verona

• Holy Family Parish will have a Veterans Day Mass and breakfast Nov. 13 at St. Joseph Church, 825 Second St. Mass will begin at 8:30 a.m. and a free pancake breakfast for veterans will be served afterward in the social hall. Veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms if possible. Reservations requested, but walk-ins welcome. Reservations: Sharon, 412-512-4953.
