Veterans Day events planned in the Alle-Kiski Valley

Veterans Day events are planned throughout the Valley. They include:

Apollo

Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home will host the 16th annual Apollo Area Veterans program at noon Nov. 11 at the funeral home, 100 Owens View Ave., Apollo. Funeral director Norman E. Connors will celebrate the lives, contributions and impact of each of the 65 veterans served by the funeral home in the past year. Participants will include the Rev. Thomas Holmes of Slickville Presbyterian Church, Armstrong County American Legion Honor Guard, Memory Makers Dove Release, vocalist Sarah Williams, Paige and Leah Kunkle and master of ceremonies James A. Kunkle. The public is welcome.

Brackenridge

Brackenridge American Legion will have a Veterans Day service at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the post, 845 E. First Ave. The public is welcome.

Harrison

• Allegheny Valley Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor a Thanks to Our Veterans event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 6 in the hospital lobby, Natrona Heights. There will be a POW/MIA table, boards to honor all veterans, a star ornament tree, a free American flag raffle and a container for old flags that need to be retired. All veterans are welcome.

Birdville Boy Scout Troop 186, Harrison, in cooperation with Harrison Veterans of Foreign Wars, will perform a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 1 p.m. Nov. 11 at the post, 894 Veterans Lane, off Freeport Road, in Natrona Heights. Worn-out American flags may be deposited in collection barrels located at the Brackenridge, Natrona Heights and Tarentum post offices and at the Harrison and Tarentum branches of Community Library of Allegheny Valley. Collection barrels will be in place through Nov. 8.

Leechburg

• The Kiski Valley Community Band will present a free Veterans Day concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Leechburg Elks, 228 Market St. Free admission. Please use the side door.

• First United Methodist Church will honor veterans at the 11 a.m. Nov. 10 worship service at the church, 251 Main St. A luncheon will be served afterward in the social hall. Reservations are required for the luncheon. Reservation deadline is Nov. 3. Reservations: 724-845-8761

• The Marconi Club will host a free Veterans Day spaghetti dinner for all veterans from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 11 at the club, 135 River Ave. Veterans and one guest eat for free. Veterans do not have to be club members.

Kiski Township

Apollo-Ridge School District invites the public to attend its annual free Veterans Day program from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Nov 7 in the high school auditorium, Route 56, Kiski Township. The program opens with the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by the high school chorus, followed by a question-and-answer forum moderated by Chris Zawacki, ninth-grade history teacher. A panel of veterans will answer questions from ninth-grade history students. The program concludes with a special ceremony honoring veterans and rolling taps performed by high school band students. Light refreshments will be served afterward. Veterans who wish to participate on the panel should call Christine McCormick at 724-478-6000, ext. 1001.

Oakmont

Oakmont Historical Society will host a Veterans Day Open House from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 9 at the society, 628 Allegheny River Blvd. There will be a photographic tribute to living veterans and those currently serving and a free raffle for veterans and their families. Refreshments will be served.

Burket-Truby Funeral Home Cremation & Alternative Services Inc. will have a Veterans Day service at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 9 at Riverside Community Church, 401 Allegheny Ave. The service will be in memory of all veterans. Guest speaker will be Gary Rogers. A continental breakfast will be served, and there will be door prizes.If you have lost a veteran within the past year and would like them to be remembered, call 412-828-3535 or email Burket-Truby at BTFH3535@aol.com by Nov. 1. Reservations are preferred due to space limitations.

Springdale

Bells of peace will ring at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 to mark the end of World War I. Springdale Veterans Association will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 11:15 a.m. at the Porter Street Monument in Springdale. A wreath laying ceremony will be at 11:45 a.m. at Springdale Veterans Memorial Field and a plaque mounted on the field wall.

Tarentum

Allegheny-Kiski Heritage Museum, 224 E. Seventh Ave., Tarentum, will present a Veterans Day program at 2 p.m. Nov. 9 at the museum. A short film that highlights the contributions of two Tarentum brothers that went off to World War I at the same time will be screened. Retired New Kensington-Arnold School District teacher Larry Rowe will be the speaker.

Verona

The Oakmont, Verona and Plum Catholic Veteran’s Day Mass and breakfast will be Nov. 10 at St. Joseph Church, Verona. Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. in the church and a pancake breakfast will be afterward in the St. Joseph School cafeteria, 825 Second St. Breakfast is free for veterans and $5 for non-veterans. Reservations are required. For reservations, call 412-793-4511.
