Vice President Mike Pence visited David’s Diner in Springdale Township today for a classic Reuben sandwich and some good company.

Owners David and Lisa Speer they learned Sunday that the vice president was planning a visit.

Pence found the restaurant online and wanted to support a business with their ideals, Speer said. As a former combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Speer said his diner is dedicated to giving back to other veterans and first responders.

Speer said he was “completely amazed and shocked” to welcome the vice president.

“Everybody was energetic,” he said.

Pence chit-chatted about the economy and the covid-19 crisis during his visit.

That enthusiasm spilled out of the diner and into the nearby parking lot of Zaleski’s Outlet. There, a small group of Pence supporters congregated to wait for the motorcade.

Steve Schlauch was one of several people there holding a Trump flag. He said it was special for the vice president to visit his hometown.

“It means a lot because I fully support President Trump and Vice President Pence to move America forward,” he said.

“It feels like a patriotic duty to show support,” Cole Moretti, a Tarentum native, said.

The vice president was in the diner for over an hour before departing for Oberg Industries in Buffalo Township.
