A West Deer man was ordered to stand trial on drug and other charges after a state trooper accused him of driving with a license suspended for DUI and having heroin and crack in his car.
Troy Allen Cyphert, 58, of the 1000 block of Mueller Street was charged with a felony count of possession of drugs with the intent to deliver along with counts of drug possession and driving with a suspended license in connection with a November 2021 traffic stop.
Cyphert waived his right to a preliminary hearing April 19 before District Judge Carolyn Bengel, who ordered him to stand trial in Allegheny County Court. He was released from custody on his own recognizance to await trial. Formal arraignment is scheduled for June 6.
A state trooper wrote in a criminal complaint that he was on patrol along Freeport Road in East Deer near the New Kensington Bridge when he saw Cyphert driving a Toyota Corolla and pulled him over.
The trooper noted he has stopped Cyphert “many times” while he was traveling to Pittsburgh or New Kensington to buy heroin and was aware that his license was suspended, according to a criminal complaint.
Cyphert’s criminal history includes numerous arrests and convictions for drug and other offenses, court records show.
Cyphert told the trooper he had 10 stamp bags of heroin in his pocket that he bought for $60 for his own use. The heroin was seized along with a green pill and a rock of crack cocaine, the complaint said.
Cyphert told the trooper the crack was for an acquaintance who talked him into traveling to New Kensington to buy it because “the crack is better there,” the complaint said.
Police wrote in Cyphert’s arrest papers that Cyphert was upset he bought the crack for the acquaintance without getting the money up front, saying: “Now I’m going to be out that $20.”
