A convicted felon who was arrested for violating his probation faces additional charges after West Deer police said they found two pistols, more than 1,300 rounds of ammunition and marijuana in his house.
Shawn Dewayne Daniels, 41, of the 2400 block of Saxonburg Boulevard in West Deer was charged with two felony counts of illegal possession of a firearm and a count of prohibited acts for the marijuana that was confiscated, according to a criminal complaint.
Daniels is being detained in the Allegheny County Jail on the parole violation, according to court personnel, who said he was awaiting arraignment on the gun and drug charges.
A date for his preliminary hearing and a decision on whether he can be released on bond will take place during his arraignment, court officials said.
West Deer police wrote in Daniels’ arrest papers that officers were asked Feb. 13 by state parole agents to help serve a probation violation warrant at his home.
Officers said there was a strong odor of marijuana in the house and that they found a half-smoked cigar wrapper filled with marijuana in an ashtray.
While doing a “walk through” of the home, police found a Taurus 9 mm handgun with a magazine and eight rounds of ammunition on a TV stand in the bedroom, according to a criminal complaint.
Daniels told police that the gun they found belongs to his ex-wife, who hasn’t lived in the home since June, the complaint said.
Police said Daniels had contact with police and probation agents on multiple occasions since she left but never turned the weapon over to authorities.
Police said Daniels was taken into custody because possessing alcohol, drugs or firearms is a violation of state parole rules.
After getting a search warrant for the house, police found a Sig Sauer 9 mm handgun in the laundry room.
Investigators also found two loaded magazines for a third pistol along with 850 rounds of 22 mm rifle ammunition and 450 rounds of 9 mm ammo in various locations in the home, the complaint said.
Two bags of marijuana, totaling less than an ounce, also were confiscated, police said.
Court records show that Daniels, who has several previous convictions for driving under the influence, was arrested by Verona police in October. He was charged with a felony DUI along with counts of driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, filing false reports and being a habitual offender.
A preliminary hearing on those charges is scheduled for Monday, March 6, before District Judge Anthony L. DeLuca, court records show.
