West Deer is moving forawrd with plans to build a new municipal building.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct the project completion date.

West Deer officials expect the construction of a new municipal building to begin this year and be completed in the fall of 2024.

The project is expected to cost just under $10 million, according to township Manager Dan Mator.

Construction of the new building does not call for tax hikes in the township’s roughly $9.4 million 2023 budget since the township supervisors have been setting aside money for several years, said Shirley Hollibaugh, board vice president. Officials plan to solicit contract bids soon.

“We’ve outgrown it,” Hollibaugh said. “We don’t have enough room for the police department, the office staff. We need a bigger place.”

Daniel Mator, township manager, said preliminary drawings already have been finished by an architect, who now is working on the construction documents.

Mator said that if a bid is awarded in April, officials expect construction to begin in May.

The building is expected to be finished in fall 2024.

The township plans to borrow $7.5 million because it has $1 million in reserves and has received $1.5 million in grant funding. The new building will sit adjacent to the current municipal building at 109 East Union Road.

Supervisors have appointed the firm of Dinsmore & Scholl LLP as bond counsel for the project.
