The West Deer Senior Citizens Center has reopened at a temporary location after a burst water pipe shuttered its operations last month.
The center, which offers low-cost meals and other services to senior citizens, will continue its work indefinitely out of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish’s St. Victor Church activity building at 531 Bairdford Road.
It’s unknown when the center will reopen at its normal location, said Erin Schmitt, site manager.
“The township found the burst (pipe),” Schmitt said. “They found the remainder of what happened Dec. 27, but they believe it happened over the weekend. It was a really cold couple of nights.
“With the damage that occurred, they think the water had been running for a couple days.”
The center’s temporary location officially opened Tuesday. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday, about 42 members participated in activities at the makeshift site.
Services such as low-cost meals, bingo and exercise programs will continue to be offered, Schmitt said.
At the center’s normal location, 4834 Route 910, members have access to a library and puzzle exchange, as well as games such as cornhole, ping pong and billiards. However, those activities are not available while the building is closed.
The center has about 60 active members, Schmitt said.
“It’s a really lovely center with a really nice group of people,” she said.
