An armed man robbed the Family Dollar store in West Deer’s Russellton area before it opened Monday morning, according to township police.

Police Chief Robert Loper said an employee reported being approached from behind by a man with a handgun after arriving at the store around 7:40 a.m. The armed man ordered the employee to unlock the front door, turn off the store’s alarm and open the safe, which the suspect emptied before leaving, Loper said. The chief did not say how much money was in the safe.

The employee was not hurt, Loper said.

Loper described the suspect as a white man about 6 feet, 1 inches tall with a muscular build and short, graying hair. He was wearing blue jeans, a gray Mossy Oak hooded sweatshirt and black and gray baseball cap.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police at 724-265-1100.
