The Westmoreland County Recorder of Deeds office at the courthouse in Greensburg will be closed Friday as technical staff work to complete a $90,000 computer system upgrade officials say will improve public access to property records.

The closure means the filing of deeds, mortgages and all other documents will be halted at 4 p.m. Thursday and not resume until 8:30 a.m. May 3, Recorder of Deeds Frank Schiefer said.

“In addition to cleaning up the public access site and giving it a fresh, cleaner look, this new system will allow us to pursue other projects in the near future. Those include expanding the types of documents that we can receive and record electronically and also a fraud alert system that will be available to the public,” Schiefer said.

The new computer software system will be the first major upgrade in about two decades and will allow users to view information without first having to download documents.

Mortgages and satisfaction of mortgages can be filed electronically. Schiefer said the system will eventually enable additional documents, such as deeds, to be submitted from remote locations rather than just in person at the courthouse.

Once implemented, the system will continue to allow free access to search and view documents, Schiefer said.

A free fraud alert system is expected to be ready for use this spring to notify registered users when documents pertaining to a piece of property is filed at the courthouse.

The Recorder of Deeds office will conduct virtual training sessions for the public to use the computer system starting on May 3. For information about how to sign up and participate, call the office at 724-830-3518.
