River Road from Apollo to Vandergrift reopened Saturday morning after a truck leaving Apollo Plaza had its fuel tank damaged Friday afternoon, dumping hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel onto the road.
According to Armstrong County 911 dispatchers, the road was reopened by about 7:18 a.m. Saturday, and the spill had been cleared. Armstrong County Public Safety Director Mike Mollick said the spill occurred around 2 p.m. Friday, and the road originally closed around 3 p.m.
PennDOT responded to the spill by dumping sand along almost four miles of River Road, from the Apollo Bridge to the Parks Township side of the Vandergrift Bridge.
No diesel fuel was believed to have reached the Kiski River, which runs alongside River Road (Route 66).
A truck traveling northbound after leaving Family Dollar ripped its saddle tank and leaked fuel as it was leaving Apollo, Mollick said.
He said a piece of equipment used in the cleanup broke, causing a several-hour delay.
