New Kensington police: Woman wanted on multiple warrants tased while resisting arrest
New Kensington police arrested a woman wanted on multiple warrants and added additional charges of identity theft and aggravated assault after, police say, she gave them a false name and fought with officers while being taken into custody.
Cally Jade Mills, 29, of South Leechburg Hill Road in Allegheny Township was charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and identity theft as well as eight lesser charges, including resisting arrest and drug possession.
City police Officer Seth Hosack was on patrol shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 when he spotted a white Volkswagen Jetta along Stevenson Boulevard that is owned by a woman whose driver’s license is suspended, according to a criminal complaint.
Hosack pulled the car over near Memorial Park and identified the driver, noting in the complaint that she is a friend of Mills. Hosack suspected that her female passenger was Mills, wanted for the outstanding warrants, the complaint said.
When Hosack asked the passenger to identify herself, she gave him a false name, the complaint said.
The officer said he challenged Mills’ response, saying that he knew the woman she identified herself as.
Mills was ordered out of the vehicle but refused to comply, Hosack said. When he opened the car door, Hosack said, Mills grabbed the handle and slammed it shut onto his hand and told the driver to leave.
A second officer at the scene tried to help Hosack remove Mills from the vehicle but she continued to resist, the complaint said.
Hosack stunned Mills with a Taser several times to try to subdue her but she continued to fight back until they were able to take her into custody, the complaint said.
The officer said some of the attempts to shock her with the Taser failed because the prongs were stopped by the sweatshirt she was wearing.
When police searched Mills’ backpack, they say they found a number of used syringes along with empty packets with suspected heroin residue. They also found a marijuana grinder and a small glass bottle filled with suspected crystal meth, according to the complaint.
A field test of the substance in bottle came back positive for methamphetamine, police said.
Before being transported to the Westmoreland County Prison, Mills was taken to UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh to be evaluated because she told police she is pregnant and had used heroin during the previous several days.
Mills is being detained at the prison after failing to post a $25,000 bond. The warrants that prompted her arrest were for theft and drug arrests in 2018 and 2020, according to court records.
She faces a preliminary hearing on Dec. 16 before District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr.
