Route 28 at Fox Chapel Road (Exit 8), one of the exits where warning signals will be installed to alert drivers who enter an on-ramp or off-ramp the wrong way.

Work that is part of the installation of a wrong-way detection system on Route 28 will be done at exits in O’Hara and Harmar starting Monday.

The work to install conduits is scheduled for between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the southbound Route 28 off ramp to Fox Chapel Road (Exit 8) in O’Hara.

Work will be done during those same hours Wednesday through Friday at the southbound off ramp to Route 910 (Exit 11) in Harmar.

The ramps will remain open to traffic, PennDOT said, but there will be shoulder restrictions during the work.

The $4.8 million safety project spans Route 28 between the Anderson Street ramp in Pittsburgh and Exit 11 in Harmar, where there were 30 wrong-way crashes from 2019 to 2023.

Sensors, detectors and cameras will be installed to detect wrong-way drivers.

If a driver enters Route 28 in the wrong direction, signs and lights will automatically activate to alert drivers and notifications will be sent to PennDOT’s Western Regional Traffic Management Center.

The project is expected to be complete in early next spring . Power Contracting is the prime contractor.
