Part of a road on the border of Pittsburgh’s Mount Oliver and Arlington neighborhoods was closed Tuesday morning because of a water main break.

Parkwood Road was closed between Otillia Street and Mountain Avenue, Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV reported.

Pittsburgh Public Safety described the break as “substantial.”

Pennsylvania American Water spokesman Gary Lobaugh said the 16-inch main broke around 5 a.m. Water was seen gushing from the buckled road.

About 40 customers were without service, Lobaugh said. Crews were working to repair the main, and Lobaugh said the company expects to restore normal service in about 12 hours.

Engineers will be called in to assess the damage to the road, authorities said. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.

No information was immediately available on any injuries or property damage.
