Weather, power outage prompts Shaler Area to cancel school safety events

The Shaler Area School District canceled two safety-related events at its high school tonight because of weather impacts.

The district was scheduled to host a demonstration of a new weapons detection system that will be in use at the high school and middle school this fall beginning at 6 p.m., followed by an active shooter community educational night with state police beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Both were canceled because of the weather and a lack of power at the school, district spokeswoman Carrie Butler said.

There was no immediate word on rescheduling.

A line of destructive storms passed through Allegheny County between 5 and 6 p.m. with wind gusts up to 80 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.

As of about 6 p.m., Duquesne Light was reporting nearly 200,000 of its customers were without power. Crews were working to assess the damage, the company said.

First Energy was reporting about 108,000 customers without power.
