From the loss of a borough legend to the appointment of a new councilmen, here’s a look of some of the top stories from around Oakmont this week.

• Community members and many others mourned the loss of Daniel “Danny” Monaco, owner of Hoffstot’s Cafe Monaco and Chelsea Grille. He and his family provided some of the finest Italian cuisines and employed many people over the years. He died Jan. 17 at age 75.

• Borough officials eagerly await a response from Harrisburg on a $500,000 grant application for flood mitigation efforts in the Oakmont Commons area. The housing development was one many in Allegheny County to be devastated by storms in July 2019.

• Council unanimously approved plans for a new 12-unit, one-floor patio home development off Hulton Road by Eleventh Street. Developers of the proposed Oakmont Place still need to acquire PennDOT and state Department of Environmental Protection permits before construction can take place.

• Council welcomed retired engineer John Arnold to its fold. He was appointed to replace Carrie Lewis DelRosso, who was recently sworn in to her new seat as representative in the state House’s 33rd District. Arnold’s term on council is set to expire at the end of the year.

Arnold, secretary for the Oakmont Commons Homeowner’s Association, said he plans to focus on infrastructure and stormwater management among other issues.
