West Ohio Street Bridge on Pittsburgh's North Side reopens
The new West Ohio Street Bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks in Allegheny Commons Park on Pittsburgh’s North Side has reopened for vehicles, pedestrians and transit as the project nears completion, Department of Mobility and Infrastructure officials announced Friday.
The $6.25 million project should be completed in early December.
The bridge closed to traffic in January 2018 because of deterioration to the 117-year-old structure. The city had previously implemented a three-ton weight restriction on the bridge and closed one of its two sidewalks before deciding to replace it.
Work on the new bridge is still ongoing, officials said, but the project is at a stage now where it can accommodate pedestrians, vehicles and transit. It reopened Thursday.
Pedestrians who had been walking along the perimeter of the worksite to cross at the temporary pedestrian bridge can now use the new structure.
Merchant Street at the intersection of Ridge Avenue is still closed, and will remain closed while the old Ridge Place bridge is demolished in the coming weeks.
Officials urged pedestrians and drivers to be mindful of construction and new detours in the area as crews continue working on the nearby roadway project in Allegheny Circle. Anyone with questions can contact the City’s Response Center by calling 311.
