1 hospitalized in Latrobe vehicle-pedestrian crash
A woman was injured Monday night after being hit by a Mutual Aid emergency response vehicle, according to Latrobe police.
She was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh area hospital, where she remained in critical condition Tuesday.
The crash was reported at 9:20 p.m. on Weldon Street near its intersection with Ligonier Street, police said. The woman was walking across the street as the vehicle was coming around a bend when the two collided, said Beth Straka, community service officer.
The person driving the Mutual Aid vehicle “got out and started medical care,” she said.
The driver was not hurt.
Mutual Aid Ambulance Service Operations Director Lorenzo Garino said the agency is cooperating with officers during the investigation. The vehicle involved was not an ambulance, police said.
Pennsylvania averaged about 4,100 crashes involving pedestrians annually between 2015 and 2019, according to PennDOT statistics. About 40% of the 2019 crashes involving a pedestrian occurred when the person was crossing a street.
Crashes involving pedestrians made up a small percentage of total crashes statewide — about 3% in both 2018 and 2019, according to PennDOT. There were 154 pedestrian deaths in Pennsylvania in 2019.
