It appears speed and drugs were factors in a fatal head-on crash Wednesday morning in Greensburg, according to the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office.

Robert J. Glendening, 37, of Hempfield was driving a Chevrolet Cruze southbound in the northbound lane of Route 819 just before 6 a.m. when the car collided with a Dodge Ram. Glendening died at the scene from blunt force injuries.

The driver of the pickup was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital for treatment. Greensburg Police Detective Justin Scalzo said 57 stamp bags of suspected fentanyl and two syringes were recovered from the car Glendening was driving.

He said the state police crash reconstruction team was on scene and is investigating the cause.

The crash was between Saybrook Village and Forbes Trail Road near the border with Hempfield. The road was closed for several hours.

Pantalone Funeral Home was handling arrangements.
