At least one motorist was taken to a local hospital to be checked out after an excavator slipped off a trailer and onto two cars Wednesday afternoon in Unity.

No major injuries were reported in the crash that happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. at Route 981 and Monastery Drive.

The excavator apparently fell as the trailer was turning from Route 981 to head east on Monastery, while the two cars were stopped on Monastery, facing west at the intersection’s traffic signal, according to Tom Schultheis, Unity Township emergency management coordinator.

The female driver of the car stopped closest to Route 981 was taken to the hospital, according to Schultheis.

“She managed to self-extricate out of the passenger side where the window was,” he said.

Local towing services were dispatched to upright the excavator and remove the damaged vehicles, he said.

Additional details weren’t immediately available.
