The eastbound lanes of the 86-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike between New Stanton and Breezewood will close for overnight work beginning at 11 p.m. on Saturday.
A detour in excess of 100 miles is being suggested for motorists who must exit at the New Stanton interchange.
Turnpike work crews will remove a damaged trailer from a truck that crashed in a construction zone in Somerset County on Jan. 11. The trailer has been stored behind construction barriers since the accident. Crews also will be repairing the highway in both travel lanes at mile marker 130 in Bedford County, which was damaged in a separate incident.
The toll road is expected to reopen at about 6 a.m. on Sunday. Travelers are advised to plan for a “lengthy detour” or to avoid the area until the lanes are reopened, the turnpike commission said.
The suggested detour:
- Exit at the New Stanton Interchange and follow Route 119/PA Turnpike Route 66
for 0.2 miles.
- Follow Turnpike Route 66 north for 14.2 miles.
- Follow Route 22 east for 63.7 miles
- Follow I-99 south for 30.4 miles
- Follow Route 30 east for 18.3 miles.
- Reenter the turnpike at the Breezewood Interchange.
There will be no detour for westbound traffic, the commission said.
