Westmoreland Manor on Monday, Sept. 28, 2020.

An additional 15 residents of Westmoreland Manor tested positive for covid-19 on Friday, according to county Commissioner Doug Chew, bringing the number of affected residents to 82.

That’s nearly a quarter of the total resident population.

Friday’s numbers come on top of 16 positive tests Thursday among the county-owned nursing home’s 336 residents and 26 staff members. All were diagnosed since the outbreak was first discovered in mid-September.

County commissioners last week called in the National Guard to assist with testing of residents at the Hempfield facility. The Guard was expected to work at the Manor for three days but the unit’s stay has been extended as cases mount.

It also comes on the same day that Westmoreland County saw its largest one-day spike in positive covid-19 tests since late April, with 54 positive results announced by the state’s health department.

The county has had 2,353 cases since the pandemic began in March.
