Greater Latrobe School District will be saying goodbye to 15 educators in June.

During the school board voting meeting in March, Superintendent Michael Porembka presented the resolution to approve the retirements of 15 tenured teachers by reading portions of different resignation letters.

“I think these statements speak highly of the culture that we try to cultivate here at Greater Latrobe,” Porembka said.

Each statement thanked the district for the opportunity to teach and grow, and stressed that it was so hard to leave because the district is a “family.” One retiree wrote that they had spent two-thirds of their life in the Greater Latrobe district. First as a student, then as a teacher. Another wrote that even though they would miss the school dearly, they “can’t wait until June.”

Porembka shared that the retirees had more than 400 years of teaching experience combined. Eight of the teachers are elementary school educators. He approved the resignations “humbly and with gratitude.” According to the school district’s website, the school has not begun advertising for the soon-to-be open positions.

“This is always so hard,” said school board member Heidi Kozar. “These are some incredible mentors. My kids had these teachers, and I was hoping my grandkids would have them. I am excited for them to take the next step, but I hope they come back to substitute.”
