Police investigate the scene where a 16-year-old boy was shot in the head Tuesday evening in Monessen.

A 16-year-old boy was shot in the head in Monessen on Tuesday evening, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

The shooting happened near the intersection of Linden Avenue and Rostraver Street, Monessen police Chief David Yuhasz told WTAE.

Police found the injured boy conscious and alert. He was then flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

The victim is expected to survive, according to the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s office.

The district attorney’s office said one person was taken into custody for the shooting. No charges were filed as of early Wednesday morning.

The teen was in a vehicle with two other people when he was shot, according to police. Multiple bullet holes and shell casing were discovered near the scene, but no other injuries were reported.

Yuhasz said there is no ongoing threat to the community. “I believe this is a targeted event, unfortunately, against this victim,” he said.

The Monessen School District nonetheless will opt for remote instruction Wednesday because of the incident.
