A Youngwood man is free on bail after Westmoreland County detectives arrested him last week in connection with a drug overdose death in West Newton, according to court papers.
Frank Edward Bogley, 68, is accused by police of selling stamp bags filled with fentanyl to a buyer on Jan. 31. Those drugs were provided to the buyer’s girlfriend, Tina Johnson, 39, who died on Feb. 1 from an overdose on fentanyl, according to court papers.
Bogley is free on $75,000 unsecured bail.
West Newton police said they found Johnson lying unconscious on the sidewalk of South Water Street at 2:30 a.m. Jan. 31. Toxicology results after her death at a hospital the next day showed she had a “significant level” of fentanyl in her blood, according to police.
Jesse Carl Long, 47, of Fairchance, identified himself to investigators as Johnson’s longtime boyfriend. He told police that a woman drove the pair to Youngwood to purchase 10 stamp bags of what they believed would be heroin for $100 from Bogley, according to court papers.
On the way back, Long told police he gave the driver two stamp bags, used one himself and handed the rest to Johnson. Police laboratory analysis showed an empty stamp bag Long purchased from Bogley contained fentanyl, according to court papers.
Long and Bogley are charged with drug delivery resulting in death and drug possession. A warrant was issued for Long’s arrest in May. A Dec. 8 preliminary hearing is set for Bogley, who could not be reached. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records. The driver has not been charged.
Fentanyl remains the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in Westmoreland County in 2020. There have been 73 drug overdose deaths in the county this year in which fentanyl played a factor, according to coroner statistics. The synthetic opioid more powerful than heroin has had a role in drug overdose deaths around the region for the past few years.
The coroner has confirmed 83 drug overdose deaths through Nov. 1 plus 18 more deaths being investigated as such.
