Westmoreland County reported 20 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday as deaths statewide soared to more than 200, according to state health officials.

The new cases bring the county’s total count to 177 since the first cases of covid-19 were identified there March 19.

Statewide, the 1,579 new cases — recorded throughout Monday — bring the state’s running total to 14,559 cases.

Health officials reported 78 new deaths, pushing the statewide death toll to 240. It’s the largest one-day increase in deaths.

Allegheny County saw 47 new cases and two more deaths, bringing the totals to 689 and six, respectively.

Many counties saw single-digit case increases:

Fayette and Greene counties both saw three newly identified cases, bring the totals to 32 and 15, respectively.

Indiana and Washington counties each reported four new cases, bringing Indiana’s total to 21 and Washington’s to 57.
