The Mt. Pleasant Glass & Ethnic Festival takes over the borough for three days every September.

Usually drawing crowds of more than 45,000 people, the 33rd annual Mt. Pleasant Glass & Ethnic Festival that was to be held the last full weekend of September is now canceled, the festival committee announced Thursday.

Jerry Lucia, co-chairman of the festival, said the committee waited to see what other communities were going to do with their festivals.

After seeing the cancellation of Fort Ligonier Days, Lucia said he and the committee “fell right in line” with their decision. The festival committee believes it had a “responsibility to ensure the safety of the visitors,” according to a statement, especially since the festival usually draws guests from New York and Maryland.

“We thought it was best for everyone,” Lucia said. “We were looking at the concerns of our vendors and musicians.”

The planning of the festival wasn’t completely set in stone, as the bulk of it happens in August, according to Lucia.

“(People) were sort of glad that we decided to cancel,” Lucia said. “Everyone is worried to be in crowds and that is a large crowd that we have.”

“People will miss it,” Lucia said, “(but) we hope to be back next year stronger than ever.”
