A $3.4 million sewer project is underway in Hempfield.

Located along Business Route 66, also known as Sheridan Road, the project to extend sewer lines along the highway started last week, said Brian Hohman, business manager at the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County.

It is expected to take a year to complete, bringing 48,700 feet of pipe to the township and servicing more than 270 homes and businesses.

Crews currently have an initial pathway of pipe laid out in the wooded area between Business Route 66 and Old State Route 66 and workers have started digging near the on ramp to northbound lanes of Route 66. Piles of pipe are located along the road leading to Hempfield Park.

According to a map on the Municipal Authority’s website, the pipeline will follow Business Route 66, branching off to side streets along the way. Work will stop shortly before Alberta Lane on the west side of Route 66 and near Beech Hills Road on the east side.

Last May, Hempfield officials said the additional pipelines should attract future residential developments.
