Three inmates at Westmoreland County Prison have tested positive for coronavirus, in addition to the two prison employees whose positive tests were announced Wednesday.
The three inmates were from the same unit, and have been quarantined, according to the county.
Their unit is on lockdown. Inmates are not allowed to enter or leave their cells, except for medical reasons and video conferencing, according to the county.
The five cases announced at the Hempfield prison this week join two from earlier this summer, when two recently admitted inmates tested positive. Both were kept in quarantine cells.
The prison implemented numerous safety measures at the start of the pandemic, which remain in effect. These include masks, daily health screenings, quarantining of new prisoners and restrictions on in-person visitation.
