Go bananas in Latrobe
Latrobe is going bananas this weekend.
The Downtown Latrobe Banana Split Celebration will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the downtown area, with live entertainment, food vendors, arts and crafts, children’s activities and, of course, helpings of the signature dessert said to have been invented in Latrobe.
The Great American Banana Split Celebration follows on Saturday, with a car show, pie-eating contest and more fun in Latrobe’s Legion Keener Park.
Runners can get an early start Saturday with the 5K Banana Run at 9 a.m. at Latrobe Memorial Stadium. Registration is closed, but the walk-up fee is $25.

Cruisin’ along
The 11th annual classic car cruise is set for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Bushy Run Battlefield in Penn Township.
The historical complex parking lot will be open to classic and custom cars, trucks and modified vehicles. Also on tap are music and other entertainment, food, a silent auction, a 50-50 raffle and more.
The museum and gift shop will be open noon-5 p.m. in the visitor center. Regular admission rates apply to museum visits.

Queens of soul
The late “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin, has been back in the news lately with the release of the biopic “Respect.”
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, The Casino Theater in Vandergrift will host “United in Song With Miss Freddye,” a tribute to the powerhouse soul singer.
Joining Miss Freddye, known as Pittsburgh’s “Leading Lady of Soul,” will be singers Kim Askew and Stevee Wellons.
A ticket is $20.

Parking lot party
Sundays on Pittsburgh Street returns to the Wilbur “Wib” Albright Parking Lot, behind Green Beacon Gallery in downtown Greensburg, from 2-6 p.m. Sunday.
The event will feature yard games, vendors, live music, drinks and food from Billus Indian Grill, Pit Take BBQ and McFeeley’s Ice Cream. The Rust Project from Pittsburgh will play classic rock covers beginning at 4 p.m.
Hosts are Green Beacon Gallery, Hugo’s Taproom and the Downtown Greensburg Project.

Big band sounds
The smooth sounds of the Wally Gingers Orchestra will waft across the Ligonier Diamond, when the weekly summer concert begins at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Founded in the 1940s, the orchestra continues to play its founder’s original arrangements by popular big band artists such as Glen Miller, The Dorsey Brothers, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Woody Herman, along with vintage hits by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Doris Day, Bobby Vinton and others.
The band will set up in front of Ligonier Town Hall. Attendees should bring their own seats.
In case of rain, the concert will move into the town hall auditorium.
