Go bananas in Latrobe

Latrobe is going bananas this weekend.

The Downtown Latrobe Banana Split Celebration will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the downtown area, with live entertainment, food vendors, arts and crafts, children’s activities and, of course, helpings of the signature dessert said to have been invented in Latrobe.

The Great American Banana Split Celebration follows on Saturday, with a car show, pie-eating contest and more fun in Latrobe’s Legion Keener Park.

Runners can get an early start Saturday with the 5K Banana Run at 9 a.m. at Latrobe Memorial Stadium. Registration is closed, but the walk-up fee is $25.

Big band sounds

The smooth sounds of the Wally Gingers Orchestra will waft across the Ligonier Diamond, when the weekly summer concert begins at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Founded in the 1940s, the orchestra continues to play its founder’s original arrangements by popular big band artists such as Glen Miller, The Dorsey Brothers, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Woody Herman, along with vintage hits by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Doris Day, Bobby Vinton and others.

The band will set up in front of Ligonier Town Hall. Attendees should bring their own seats.

In case of rain, the concert will move into the town hall auditorium.
