A good laugh

Latrobe Elks will offer its first-ever comedy show at 8 p.m. Friday at the Elks golf club, off Route 981 in Derry Township.

“Sips N Giggles Comedy Night” will feature Pittsburgh-based comedians Mike Travers and Derrick Knopsnyder, who have been performing their show across the country since 2018. Before that, they’ve shared stages with comedy greats like John Mulaney, Bo Burnham, Chris Porter, Jim Breuer, Jon Lovitz and Rob Schneider.

The show will be a mix of standup and crowd work.

You scream, I scream

The 27th annual ice cream festival is planned for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Fort Allen Antique Farm Equipment Association show grounds, 911 Porter Ave., East Huntingdon. Homemade vanilla and chocolate ice cream will be available, and the kitchen will be open.

Special events include opening ceremony, 9 a.m. Saturday; pedal tractor pull, 11 a.m. both days; tractor parade followed by tractor pull, 1 p.m. both days; and church service, 9 a.m. Sunday.

Event also will feature toy train, tractor and equipment displays; sawmill, shingle mill, blacksmith and rope-making demonstrations; horseshoe pits; flea market and craft vendors.

Have a ball

“Cannonballs & Cricket Balls” is the theme of a Living History Weekend set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Compass Inn Museum in Laughlintown.

Representatives of the Maryland-based Ship’s Company, a reenactment unit that portrays the naval contractor system used to supply the Navy during the War of 1812, will demonstrate the roles of early American businesswomen, tailors, seamstresses, sailmakers, brewers and millers.

Visitors can join author and historian Tom Melville for an early American cricket game. Cricket was popular with Pennsylvanians from the early to mid-18th-century, said Theresa Gay Rohall, executive director of Ligonier Valley Historical Society, which manages the historical site.

Other activities include guided tours of the historic stagecoach stop and outbuildings, as well as cooking and blacksmithing demonstrations.

Admission is $12, $11 for ages 62 and up, $8 for children.

Music ministry

New Song, a special music ministry group from Geneva College, will present a free outdoor concert at 2 p.m. Saturday at Laurelville Christian Retreat Center in Mt. Pleasant Township.

The performance, part of the group’s eight-state summer tour, includes a capella music and drama that presents the gospel message in a dynamic, contemporary manner.

New Song will perform at the gazebos near Laurelville’s Meeting House, which is also the rain location. Guests should bring chairs. No reservations are required.

Movie under the stars

“Hairspray,” the 2007 movie musical starring John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, will show at 7 p.m. Saturday on the big outdoor screen at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg.

Activities related to the PG-rated movie will include an art scavenger hunt, ’60s trivia worksheets and a photo booth. The galleries will be open with special late hours from 5 p.m. until the start of the movie at dusk.

Movie snacks and alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

Advance registration is required; fee is $5. The event will be canceled in event of rain and refunds issued.
