5 things to do in Westmoreland County: Jan. 3-5
Happy new year.
The champagne corks have been popped, the party hats worn, the horns blown, the countdown over.
Done hibernating? The big holiday parties may be over, but the good times are still rolling in Westmoreland County.
Run off the calories, the cold
No doubt those cookies, that eggnog and the celebratory glass or so of wine, beer, or champagne were delicious.
Resolution to lose weight, get in shape, etc., aside, we all likely can agree that the new year brings an opportunity to change or improve some habits.
And being active is good for all of us, right?
The Gingerbread Man Running Co. and Run Greensburg will host a New Year’s Resolution Run/Ruck at 11 a.m. Jan. 4 at Keystone State Park in Derry Township.
New for the 2020 event is a rucking division. This is an official goruck.com race. What is rucking? Find out here: goruck.com/rucking-101. The requirements: Wear a ruck/backpack with the standard weight — 10 pounds for participants 150 pounds and less, and 20 pounds for those more than 150 pounds. Your ruck will be weighed at the beginning of the race.
The run/fun walk will take participants around the lake, and race day sign-ups will be available.
Race is weather dependent, according to the event’s Facebook page. Cost is $15.

Getting crafty
Powdermill Nature Reserve, Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s environmental research center in Rector will host “And So They Build” at 2 p.m. Jan. 5.
As part of its “Storytime and More” program, aimed at children ages 3 to 9 and accompanied by an adult, the site will educate young ones about some animals who construct their own homes.
Those attending will learn about the sewing skills of the tailorbird, which stitches leaves together before building a nest inside. They also will explore the giant mounds cubitermes termites build, and learn about the underwater nest-building skills of the three-spined stickleback.
After reading about animal homes around the world, try your hand at building one.
The program is free.

Hey, yinzers
Eric Slivoskey and Erik Piisila, lifelong friends and 1989 Greater Latrobe Senior High School graduates, now live on opposite ends of the country.
But the special kind of humor they enjoyed as teens, along with Slivoskey’s storytelling and Piisila’s music making, has brought them back together. The two will return home to perform their act, “Plain Fun #2 With Eric and Erik,” at 7 p.m. on Jan. 4 at Greensburg’s The Palace Theatre.
They will share stories of “growing up yinzer,” perform music, and deliver comedy in what Slivoskey describes as “sort of a variety show.”
Admission is $20-$27.
