Westmoreland County sees 5th double-digit spike in covid-19 cases in 6 days
For the fifth time in six days, Westmoreland County’s new coronavirus case count is in the double digits.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 33 new covid-19 cases and no additional deaths in Westmoreland County on Friday. This brings the case total to 744 and death total to 38 in the county.
Of the total cases, 717 are confirmed and 27 are probable.
The department reported 36 new covid-19 cases on Thursday, 29 cases on Wednesday; six on Tuesday, 20 on Monday and 13 on Sunday.
In Westmoreland County, more than 18,000 people have tested negative for the virus.
Officials are urging Westmoreland County residents to be cautious this Fourth of July weekend.
“We cannot stress the importance of being safe this weekend in order to keep our numbers low and to keep our economy open,” county commissioners Gina Cerilli, Douglas Chew and Sean Kertes said in a news release Thursday. “The measures that you practice will enable the county to stay in the ‘green’ phase, protect the health of residents, continue the path toward economic recovery and prevent the governor from placing additional restrictions on Westmoreland County.”
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, there are 88,741 cases and 6,746 deaths statewide.
All of Pennsylvania is now in the green phase of Gov. Tom Wolf’s reopening plan.
