Westmoreland County reported eight new coronavirus cases between Sunday and Monday, according to state health officials.

The total number of cases rose to 55, up from from 47. The state recorded 693 new cases of covid-19 and now has 4,087. Eleven more people have died from the virus, bringing that total to 49.

The statewide increase is the largest to date.

Somerset, Indiana and Armstrong counties did not record any new cases. Fayette and Greene counties each added one new case, rising to 11 and seven, respectively.

A majority of patients — about 41% — are between 25 and 49, according to Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine. Most of those hospitalized, however, are 65 or older. Most of the deaths also have fallen into that age group, she said.

“We need everyone to listen to the orders in place and to stay calm, stay home and stay safe,” Levine said. “We know that these prolonged mitigation effects have been difficult for everyone, but it is essential that everyone follows these orders and does not go out unless they absolutely must.”
