Greensburg plans to add an electronic sign outside the entrance to Lynch Field.

Greensburg Council has abandoned a proposal to put an electronic sign in St. Clair Park and instead plans to have it installed at the entrance to Lynch Field.

Councilman Gregory Mertz said the sign will be 3 feet tall by 8 feet wide along Route 119 at the entrance to the complex.

Council on Monday approved the purchase of a $23,160 sign from Blue Sky Signs. The cost is covered mostly by a $21,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County.

City planning director Alec Italiano said the foundation gave its blessing to move the project from St. Clair Park to Lynch Field after council couldn’t come to an agreement in September.

Council tabled the proposal in September after they weren’t in agreement about where the sign should go, and if it should even be in the park.

The city’s planning commission couldn’t reach a consensus about a location for it, either.

At the time, council members expressed concerns about the potential for vandalism and damage from passing vehicles if it were installed in the park.

There were discussions about putting the sign along Arch or North Maple avenues or the back of the Robertshaw Amphitheater.

City officials continued to discuss the matter after September’s meeting.

The sign will be similar to one recently installed outside of City Hall to advertise events and other matters in Greensburg. There are signs for Lynch Field and The Aerobic Center at the entrance to the complex.
