Another big turnout for Fire Prevention Day at Westmoreland Mall

Firefighters with City of Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department and Hempfield Township Volunteer Fire Department showcase the use hydraulic tools to cut apart a car as they conduct an emergency vehicle rescue demonstration for a crowd of families gathered on Tuesday for the 24th annual Hempfield-Greensburg Fire Prevention Day in the parking lot of Westmoreland Mall.

More than 100 pieces of fire apparatus were available to the public during Tuesday’s 24th annual Fire Prevention Day.

Hosted at Westmoreland Mall, families were able to see engine pumpers, ladder trucks, utility vehicles, command posts, rescue vehicles and 911 displays. Firefighters gave lessons about fire safety and live demonstrations.

“We have a great turnout every year for this and, even the year that it rained the entire evening, we still had a great turnout,” said Hempfield Township Manager Jason Winters.

The event was founded by former Greensburg Fire Chief Ed Hutchinson, who died in 2018, and Hempfield Township. Winters said firefighters last year dedicated the event to Hutchinson, who served as chief from 1952 until 2016.

The event is presented by Hempfield’s 12 fire departments and firefighters from South Greensburg, Southwest Greensburg and Greensburg.
