1 dead, 2 injured in Jeannette shooting

One person is dead and two are injured after a shooting at a Jeannette home Monday evening, according to police.

Officers, who were in the parking lot of the police station a block away, responded to Cuyler Avenue shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday after 14 or 15 shots rang out, Mayor Curtis Antoniak said. Police found casings on the porch of a house but a search of the home did not find any suspects.

“This is not a random shooting,” Antoniak said. “It’s something that escalated and, believe me, I’m very saddened by this. This is not Jeannette. We are trying to get rid of the black eye and image and then you have this.”

Antoniak said several victims were taken to area hospitals. The deceased person was not immediately identified.

Police Chief Shannon Binda said everyone involved in the shooting was in police custody. A fourth person was interviewed at the police station.

The home at 96 Cuyler Ave. is a rental, the mayor said.

Police at the scene cordoned off the area and made residents remain in their homes in case the shooter was still in the house. Police with semi-automatic rifles and K9 dogs were visible on the street along with emergency medical crews.

People gathered in a parking lot at the intersection of Bullitt Avenue and Third Street as police investigated the scene, while several others watched from the street outside Jeannette Manor.

“I believe this was an argument between people and it escalated into a terrible, terrible tragedy,” Antoniak said.

Shortly after the shooting, police surrounded a home on North First Street and remained there for hours. Officers said they did not find anything at the house.
