Bail rejected for Greensburg man charged in shooting outside Rialto Cafe

Bail was denied Wednesday for a Greensburg man accused of the attempted homicide of a bystander struck with an errant bullet fired during a gunfight earlier this year outside of a city bar.

Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Christopher Feliciani rejected a defense motion that sought to allow 23-year-old Evan Curley to await trial at home. Curley has been held without bail since his arrest in February.

Police said Curley and another man, Stevin “Twogunz” German, 27, of Uniontown, exchanged fire on the Greensburg streets outside of the Rialto Cafe on Jan. 30 following an altercation inside of the bar. Investigators said both men briefly left the bar to retrieve guns and returned to continue the feud, which eventually spilled outside.

German fired eight shots, including two that wounded Curley. One round shattered a glass window on a walking bridge over Pennsylvania Avenue which connects to the Westmoreland County Courthouse Extension office building. Curley fired one shot that struck a bystander, police said.

During a court hearing late last month, Curley’s lawyer said his client acted in self-defense and asked that he be released to house arrest pending trial. A Michigan native who attended Westmoreland County Community College, Curley would remain in the Greensburg area as he awaits trial, defense attorney T. Brent McCune said.

County prosecutors objected to Curley’s pretrial release, saying he was a danger to the community.

German, who is also charged with attempted murder and other offenses in connection with the shooting, had his bond set last month by Feliciani at $250,000. According to court records, German has not posted bail and remains jailed as he awaits trial.
