Butterflies are free for Greensburg Garden Center release
Butterflies are now free for Greensburg Garden Center’s annual release.
Thanks to funding from Dominion Energy, remaining monarch butterflies can be reserved at no charge, says garden center president Carla Rusnica.
The Aug. 8 event will include two separate release sessions, to accommodate social distancing concerns. Release times will be 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Lefevre Butterfly Garden behind the center’s headquarters at 951 Old Salem Road.
A ceremony will precede each release.
Center members also will offer a garden flea market, featuring items such as planters, plant hangers, garden tools, watering items and a new white, metal arbor with decorative lights, still in its original box. Novelty items for children, including butterfly masks and tiaras, also will be available.
Educational displays will include live butterfly larvae on milkweed, information on the monarch butterfly life cycle and an assortment of butterfly books for all ages that can be checked out from the center’s library.
Hot dogs and macaroni and cheese will be available for purchase. Free lemonade and other Turner Dairy Farm drinks will be served.
To reserve butterflies, call 724-837-0245 or email ggc951@live.com.
For those concerned about social distancing, butterflies can be picked up curbside on Aug. 8 for release at home.
