Norwin High School students who want to shoot clay targets could get the chance to compete against other schools this spring.

About 20 students are interested in competing for Norwin in the Pennsylvania Clay Target League, said Lt. Col. David Sandala, high school senior aerospace science instructor. The co-curricular club requires school board approval because it must be associated with a school district in order to compete with other clubs in the league, Sandala said.

Students would shoot at the Trafford Sportsmen Club in Penn Township.

While there are clay target programs at Bentworth, Connellsville Area, Fort Cherry and Trinity high schools, Sandala said the teams do not directly compete with each other. Winners are determined by comparing scores that are kept electronically.

Before students can participate in the league, they and their coaches must undergo safety training, Sandala said. Four coaches who are interested in working with the students would undergo standard background checks, he said.

The club would operate without any school district funding, although there is a $60 fee for the student shooters, Sandala said.

If the school board approves clay target shooting as an activity, the students could compete this spring, he said

Students may register through March 22 for a season that begins on April 21, according to the league’s website.
