Cold weather shelters have opened for the season in Westmoreland County.

The shelters provide emergency lodging for people or families who are homeless or don’t have heat through a partnership among the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Welcome Home Shelter and Union Mission.

When nighttime temperatures fall below 25 degrees, the shelters will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

The two shelters have provided nearly 300 nights of emergency lodging over the past few years. Overnight guests also can get food, transportation and referrals for community services. Transportation to the shelters, in Greensburg and just outside of Latrobe, is available from Westmoreland Community Action, if needed.

Individuals can call 211 to check whether shelters will be open on a given evening and to access transportation. The service will be available through March 31.
