The Westmoreland County Prison was locked down for about six hours Thursday after a problem with the facility’s computer system, said Warden John Walton.

Burned-out pieces of equipment may have been the cause and the system was back up and operating by 2:30 p.m. after they were replaced, Walton said.

“We’re back to normal,” he said.

The computer system controls the doors at the Hempfield facility.

Inmates remained in their cells while information technology employees with the county investigated the issue that started at 8:30 a.m. The jail canceled prisoner transports for court hearings and other matters, he said.
