The bakers contributing cookies to the Monongahela Area Historical Society’s attempt to set a Guinness World Record for largest cookie table only had to exceed 18,000 cookies.

Instead, according to the final tally, their wedding cookie spread totaled 88,425.

That number was far north of the conservative “at least 50,000” Guinness World Record adjudicator Christina Conlon guessed during the city’s 250th anniversary celebration on Aug. 11.

Historical society President Laura Magone, founder of the Facebook group the Wedding Cookie Table Community, made the announcement Thursday afternoon.

“I had no idea what to expect. We knew we would do better than (18,000),” she said.

She was notified of the final number on Thursday morning and immediately put a signmaker to work.

The sign is hanging on Main Street, she said, and the framed certificate Guinness presented the city on Sunday likely will have a home in the historical society’s Longwell House.

Magone suspects the record will be challenged sooner rather than later.

“I’m very happy. Something inside of me tells me we are going to be defending the record,” she said.

For now, she’s thrilled with the win.

“It’s nice that it happened in a small town. There is a lot of excitement,” Magone said.
