Phone scammers are impersonating the Greensburg police officers, even making it appear as if they’re calling from the department’s real phone number, according to police.

The scammers tell residents their Social Security numbers have been stolen and used for illegal activity, leading to warrants for their arrest, according to police.

The callers say they’re working with police, then pretend to transfer the call to the Greensburg Police Department.

The victim’s caller ID will show the department’s real number: 724-834-3800. Police warn residents not to be fooled. The scammers use “spoofing,” a technique used to trick caller ID systems into displaying a false number.

Greensburg police remind residents to never give out personal information over the phone, or send money to anyone threatening to arrest them.

Greensburg residents who need assistance are asked to call the real police at 724-834-3800.
