Coronavirus changes North Huntingdon VFW post's Veterans Day celebration
Like so many other aspects of life, the coronavirus pandemic and restrictions on large gatherings forced changes in the annual Veterans Day celebration at the J. Howard Snyder Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 781 in North Huntingdon.
Instead of a large gathering inside the VFW post, Commander Kory Bulloch said the ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 will be held outside at the new flagpole, which will be dedicated to the late Don Kattic, longtime former commander of the VFW post.
Kattic, who was post commander for 20 years, served with the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He died in January at age 87.
A small luncheon will be available for VFW members following the ceremony, said Bulloch, a Navy veteran.
The VFW post is planning a celebration next year, which is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the post. Bulloch said he is hoping to have a special event each month, but that will be dependent upon what happens with the covid-19 pandemic.
The post is named for Snyder, who was the first soldier from Irwin who was killed during World War I. It was founded in June 2021, Bulloch said.
