Coronavirus numbers tallied for Penn-Trafford area
Recent state data shows there have been 475 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the Penn-Trafford area since the start of the international pandemic in March, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The health department on Monday released data on confirmed cases of the virus in the five Penn-Trafford area ZIP codes, showing an increase of 117 positive cases since Nov. 3.
The health department keeps a count of coronavirus cases and test results for communities based on ZIP codes.
The largest number of cases, 240, originated in the 15644 ZIP code, which includes Jeannette and parts of Penn Township.
The 15085 ZIP code, which encompasses Trafford, shows 101 confirmed cases.
There have been 78 confirmed cases in the 15636 ZIP code, which includes the Harrison City neighborhood.
The Manor (15665), Claridge (15623) and Penn (15675) ZIP codes have seen 33, 10 and 13 cases, respectively.
The data also show 5,154 negative test results in those five areas. With a total of 5,629 tests, just over 8% have come back positive.
The Penn-Trafford School District has undergone multiple school closures this year due to confirmed virus cases in its buildings. Just under 60 students and staff members have tested positive since the school year began.
According to the state’s tracking website, in Westmoreland County there have been 5,128 confirmed cases, 1,138 probable cases, 57,800 negative tests and 136 deaths since the outbreak began.
Despite a small spike in late June and early July, the county’s daily confirmed case counts had remained relatively low until a sharp uptick beginning in late September. That number went back and forth, but has remained much larger than in the pandemic’s early stages, reaching an all-time high of 189 positive cases reported on Veteran’s Day last week. That number was nearly reached again with 187 cases reported Saturday.
