Coronavirus spread continues to slow in North Huntingdon-Irwin area as of Feb. 1

The spread of covid cases in the North Huntingdon, Irwin and North Irwin areas dropped again over the past seven days, falling to just 47 new cases from Jan. 25 to Feb. 1, a 1.8% increase in total cases, according to data released Monday by the state Department of Health.

The number of confirmed covid cases in the North Huntingdon-Irwin, Larimer, Ardara and Westmoreland City ZIP codes increased to 2,533 since March 2020, up from 2,484 as of Jan. 25. From Jan. 18 to 25, there was a 4.8% increase in the number of coronavirus cases in that region. The largest zip code, covering North Huntingdon-Irwin, also includes some of the western edge of Hempfield and Penn townships, but does not include the sections of North Huntingdon bordering Trafford or White Oak, covered under different ZIP codes.

The three municipalities, with a population of about 35,000, had 1,099 probable but not confirmed cases since March, an increase of only 37 from Jan. 25 to Feb. 1. There were 10,852 negative tests results as of Feb. 1, up from 10,643 as of Jan. 25. The negative test results include a count of the persons who have had more than one negative covid test.

In the North Huntingdon-Irwin-North Irwin 15642 ZIP code, there were 2,448 confirmed covid cases, 1,071 probable cases and 10,515 cases negative test results since March.

There were 61 confirmed covid cases in the Westmoreland City 15692 ZIP code, 18 probable cases and 206 negative test results.

In the Ardara 15615 ZIP code, there were 18 confirmed cases, five probable and 62 negative test results.

There were 14 confirmed cases in the Larimer 15647 ZIP code, five probable cases and 69 negative test results.

In the Norwin School District, nine students and one staff member reported having contracted coronavirus between Jan. 25 and Feb 1. All school buildings with the exception of the Stewartsville Elementary and Hahntown Elementary schools, had at least one student who tested positive between Jan. 25 and Feb. 1.

The school district’s Covid-19 Tracker lists five active covid cases as of Monday and 279 cases that have been resolved since school opened on Aug. 31.
