Marta Lanager 16, of Greensburg is comforted by her mother Debbie and nurse Patti Kimball as she receives a Pfizer vaccine shot in Greensburg on April 24. Norwin students age 16 and older will be able to get the first of two vaccine shots on May 14.

Norwin High School students age 16 and older can get the first of the two-dose Pfizer covid vaccine during a clinic Friday, May 14 at the Norwin High School auxiliary gymnasium.

The vaccine will also be available to any student’s family member older than 16.

The clinic will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at the gym, 251 McMahon Drive, North Huntingdon.

There will be 160 doses available.

They will be administered in appointments scheduled every 15 minutes, said Shane Spielvogle, executive director of the North Huntingdon Rescue/EMS. The organization is working with Rite Aid staff to conduct the clinic.

Additional vaccination appointments will be added if the demand warrants it, Spielvogle said.

Rite Aid staff will give the shot. The second dose will be administered on June 4. Appointments for the second shot will be made during the first-dose clinic, the school district said.

Participants will be fully immune on Jun 19, two weeks after the second dose, said Dr. Jacqueline Burkett, Rite Aid’s regional pharmacy leader.

Register online

To get the first shot of the Pfizer vaccine, people must register online and choose a time slot by clicking the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/norwinrite-aidnorth-huntingdon-emsrescue-pfizer-1st-dose-vaccine-clinc-tickets-152399309437

An immunization consent form must be completed by those who want to receive a vaccine. Students and family members are asked to bring a state-issued ID, Burkett said. They should also bring their medical and prescription insurance to the clinic if available.

An advantage of students getting the covid vaccine is that they will have full immunity and will not need to be quarantined if they have close contact to a person with the virus and are symptom-free, said Heather Newell, Norwin’s pandemic coordinator. According to the CDC, experts believe that getting the vaccine also helps keep people from getting seriously ill even if they contract covid, Newell said.

“Vaccinating our older students at this clinic will help Norwin move one step closer to normal educational operations,” said Jeff Taylor, Norwin superintendent.

Those who will get the shots can park in the main lot and enter through High School Door No. 6, which is the auditorium entrance.
