A New Stanton man was killed Wednesday afternoon when his vehicle hit a concrete pole and rolled over an embankment in Hempfield, state police at Greensburg said.

Charles J. Jupena, 71, was driving his northbound Honda Accord in the area of 1538 Arona Road at 2:12 p.m. when his car crossed the centerline of the highway and went into the southbound lane before traveling off the road, hitting the pole with the front bumper and rolling onto its roof, police said. The car landed in a ditch near Merlin Drive, south of Wendel Road.

Jupena was transported to Excela Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Information from the Westmoreland County Coroner was not available early Thursday morning.

Arona Road reopened to traffic at 4:15 p.m.

A state police accident reconstruction team was at the scene.
