Eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike reopened Wednesday evening more than two hours after a tractor-trailer overturned just east of the New Stanton interchange.

The crash occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m., a Westmoreland County 911 dispatcher said.

According to New Stanton fire Chief Rob Cammarata, no one was injured when the rig crashed into a section of guardrail and overturned along the right-hand eastbound lane.

Its load of empty car batteries were scattered down a hillside along the road, Cammarata said.

“They didn’t have acid in them, so nothing hazardous spilled,” he said.

“The turnpike was completely shut down for a period of time,” he said, as crews from his station and neighboring Youngwood and Mt. Pleasant fire departments responded.

He said a towing company was clearing away the wreck when fire units left the scene at about 5 p.m.

Turnpike spokeswoman Renee Vid Colborn said all lanes reopened at about 6 p.m., with a backlog of traffic expected to clear soon after.
