Crews from the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County worked Monday to stabilize a sinkhole that opened between two properties along Keystone Street in Greensburg.

Greensburg public works officials said a water line collapse resulted in a sinkhole in a rear yard area along the 600 block of Keystone Street about 6:30 a.m. Monday morning, according to Greensburg public works officials.

“We had a leak in that area yesterday,” MAWC spokesperson Matt Junker said. “There had also been some other utility work on gas lines recently, and there are some storm drains that drain off onto that hillside.”

Municipal authority officials brought in an engineer to determine how best to address the damage.

“We repaired the leak, but being that it just happened yesterday, we don’t have a timeline yet for when things will be finished. Sometimes these situations can take a little while to sort out, when you have multiple utilities involved.”

No one was injured when the hillside collapsed, according to Junker and Mutual Aid Ambulance spokesperson Shawn Penzera.
